Signs you need this

  • Water dripping from a ceiling or pooling by an outside wall
  • No water from a tap during a cold snap (the pipe may be frozen)
  • Bulging, soft or stained drywall
  • The sound of running water when every tap is off

A burst pipe right now? Do this first

  1. Shut off the main water valve. It’s usually in the basement where the water line comes in, near the meter.
  2. Open a tap on the lowest floor to drain the water left in the pipes.
  3. Turn off power to wet areas only if you can reach the electrical panel without standing in water.
  4. Take photos and video of the damage before you move anything. Your insurer will ask for them.
  5. Call us. We’ll tell you what to do next while we get on the way.

Why pipes burst in Edmonton

Extreme cold is the obvious cause. In January 2024, Edmonton had four straight days between -40 and -45°C, and frozen and burst pipes drove most of the insurance claims that followed. Pipes in outside walls, crawl spaces, garages and unheated corners are most at risk.

The thaw is the second wave. Water freezes, splits the pipe, and stays plugged by ice. When the temperature jumps, the ice melts and water pours out of the crack. During one sudden warm-up, Edmonton Fire Rescue responded to 39 pipe calls in a single night.

What we do

A burst pipe puts clean water into places you can’t see. It runs along joists, soaks insulation inside walls and wicks up drywall. If that water stays, materials swell, stain and can start to grow mould.

We find every wet area with moisture meters, not guesswork. Then we extract standing water, remove only the materials that can’t be saved, and dry the rest in place with air movers and dehumidifiers. We take readings on each visit and finish only when the numbers say the structure is dry.

If the pipe was in a ceiling, we also check the floor below and the cavities between. Water from upper floors often ends up in the basement.

Insurance

Burst-pipe damage is typically covered by standard home insurance policies. There can be limits if the home was left unattended in winter, so read that section of your policy. We document the damage with photos and moisture readings so your adjuster has what they need. See our insurance claim help.

Stop the next one

Our guide to preventing frozen pipes in Edmonton covers what to do before a cold snap and when you leave home in winter.

Our process

  1. Stop the water

We confirm the main is off and the broken pipe is isolated so a plumber can repair it.

  2. Map the moisture

Moisture meters and thermal checks show how far water travelled inside walls, ceilings and floors.

  3. Extract and open up

We remove standing water and open only the materials that can't be dried in place.

  4. Dry and verify

Air movers and dehumidifiers run until our readings show the structure is dry.

What it costs

Questions people ask

How do I shut off the water?

Find your main water shut-off valve, usually where the water line enters the basement near the meter, and turn it clockwise until it stops. If you can't find it or it won't turn, call us and we'll talk you through it.

Will insurance cover a burst pipe?

Burst-pipe damage is typically covered by standard home policies, but there can be limits if the home was left unattended in winter. Check your policy or call your broker before you assume either way.

Can a pipe burst when it warms up?

Yes. Pipes often burst as they thaw, because the ice that split the pipe stops holding the water back. Edmonton Fire Rescue once handled 39 pipe calls in a single night during a sudden thaw.

Do you fix the pipe itself?

Our job is the water damage. Your plumber repairs the pipe. We can work alongside them so drying starts as soon as the leak is stopped.

Do you have to cut open my walls?

Only where water is trapped and can't be dried in place, such as soaked insulation behind drywall. We measure first and remove as little as possible.
