Strathcona County’s backwater valve rebate
Sherwood Park is part of Strathcona County, which has its own backwater valve program. The County rebates up to 50% of backwater valve costs, to a maximum of $1,200. That’s more than EPCOR’s Edmonton subsidy, so it’s worth a look if your home doesn’t have a valve.
A backwater valve lets wastewater leave your house but closes when the sewer pushes water back toward you. If you’ve had water come up through your floor drain, this is the fix that stops it happening again.
Read the County’s rebate page for eligibility and how to apply, and our backwater valve subsidy guide for an overview.
The rebate is for single-family homes or side-by-side duplexes built before 1989 and served by the County’s sewer system. Get permits first, then installation and the plumbing inspection, then apply with your receipt and permit copy.
After a sewer backup in Sherwood Park
Sewer backup water is contaminated. Keep everyone out of it, stop using your drains, and call us. We remove the sewage and anything porous it soaked, like carpet, underpad and the bottom of drywall. Then we clean, sanitize and dry, and photograph each step for your insurer.
Remember that standard home insurance doesn’t include sewer backup or overland flood coverage. They’re separate add-ons. If you’re not sure which you have, our guide on overland flood vs sewer backup explains how to check.
Winter in Sherwood Park
Frozen pipes are the other big risk. Pipes in outside walls, garages and crawl spaces are the first to go in a cold snap, and many burst when they thaw. Our guide to preventing frozen pipes covers what to do before and during a cold snap.
