Sewage in your basement? Do this first

  1. Stop using water. Don’t flush, run taps, the dishwasher or the washer. Everything you drain can come up the floor drain.
  2. Stay out of the water. Keep children and pets upstairs.
  3. Turn off power to the basement only if you can reach the panel without stepping in water.
  4. Take photos and video for your insurer before anything is moved.
  5. Call us.

Why sewer backup is different

Water from a burst pipe is clean. Sewer backup is not. It carries sewage, so the cleanup follows a different standard. Porous materials it soaked can’t be reliably cleaned, so they come out. Hard surfaces are cleaned and sanitized, and then the space is dried.

We remove the contaminated water and materials, bag them, and photograph what leaves the house so your adjuster can see it. Then we clean, sanitize and dry, and check readings before we call the job done.

Insurance

Standard Canadian home insurance does not include sewer backup. It’s a separate add-on. If you have it, call your insurer early and keep our photos and notes. If you’re not sure what you have, our guide to overland flood vs sewer backup coverage explains the difference.

Prevent the next backup

The City of Edmonton notes that backwater valves largely prevent sewer backup. A backwater valve lets wastewater leave your house but closes when the sewer pushes water back the other way.

  • In Edmonton, EPCOR offers a backwater valve subsidy of up to $800 for eligible homes, mainly those built before 1989.
  • In Sherwood Park, Strathcona County rebates up to 50% of the cost, to a maximum of $1,200.

Our backwater valve subsidy guide walks through both programs.

Is it your sewer line?

Repeat backups can mean a cracked, sagging or root-filled sewer line. Once the cleanup is done, Edmonton Sewer Repair can run a camera down the line to find out.

Our process

  1. Make it safe

We keep people and pets out, and protect the rest of the house from contamination.

  2. Remove sewage and debris

Contaminated water and solids are extracted and disposed of properly.

  3. Remove what can't be cleaned

Carpet, underpad, and the wet bottom of drywall and insulation are removed and photographed for your insurer.

  4. Clean, sanitize and dry

Hard surfaces are cleaned and sanitized, then the space is dried and checked with moisture readings.

Questions people ask

Is sewer backup water dangerous?

Yes. Treat it as contaminated. Keep children and pets away, don't walk through it, and don't try to clean it with a household vacuum or mop.

What has to be thrown out?

Porous materials that sewage touched, such as carpet, underpad, upholstered furniture, cardboard, and the wet parts of drywall and insulation. Hard items like metal, glass and sealed plastic can usually be cleaned.

Does home insurance cover sewer backup?

Only if you bought sewer backup coverage. Standard Canadian home policies don't include it; it's a separate add-on. Check your policy or ask your broker.

How do I stop it happening again?

A backwater valve largely prevents sewer backup. EPCOR subsidizes up to $800 for eligible Edmonton homes, and Strathcona County rebates up to $1,200 in Sherwood Park.

Who fixes the sewer line?

We clean up the damage. If your sewer line is cracked or full of roots, our sister company Edmonton Sewer Repair handles camera inspections and repairs.
