We clean up and dry Edmonton homes after burst pipes, basement floods, sewer backups and storm water. If water is coming in now, shut off your main water valve if it’s a pipe, stop using drains if it’s a backup, and call us.

Edmonton’s two flood seasons

Edmonton gets water damage from both ends of the year.

Winter cold. In January 2024 the city had four straight days between -40 and -45°C, and frozen and burst pipes drove most of the insurance claims that followed. The thaw brings its own wave. During one sudden warm-up, Edmonton Fire Rescue answered 39 pipe calls in a single night.

Summer storms. On June 21, 2026, the City of Edmonton issued an overland flow flood advisory after heavy rain pushed the stormwater system to capacity. Edmonton broke its June rainfall record that year. When storm sewers are full, water runs across yards and into basements, and sewers can back up through floor drains.

Why Edmonton basements flood

The City of Edmonton names three main causes of basement flooding:

  • surface water from poor lot grading or short downspouts
  • water getting in through basement cracks
  • sewer backup through the floor drain

The City also notes that backwater valves largely prevent sewer backup.

EPCOR’s flood prevention programs

In Edmonton, EPCOR offers two programs worth knowing about:

  • A free flood prevention home inspection that looks at how water could get into your house.
  • A backwater valve subsidy of up to $800 for eligible homes, mainly those built before 1989 or in areas that have flooded before. EPCOR’s pre-approval inspection is currently suspended.

Our backwater valve subsidy guide explains the steps.

What we do in Edmonton homes

We pump out standing water, tell you plainly what can be saved, and dry walls, floors and framing in place with air movers and dehumidifiers. We measure moisture on every visit and finish only when readings are back to normal. Photos, readings and a list of removed items go to your insurer.

Backwater valves were not required in Edmonton homes built before 1989. If your home is older and you can’t find one, it may not have one.

We also serve St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Beaumont and Fort Saskatchewan.
